The above/right paling shapes form the basis of the many designs of picket fencing which can be created, a few examples of which are illustrated on other pages of this web site. The palings are based on normal timber industry nominal timber sizes which, when planed down, give an approximate actual width. The sizes are nominal 100 mm wide, (approx 96 mm) nominal 80 mm (approx 76mm) and the nominal 50 mm (approx 46 mm) wide blank palings.
Picket fences are not just confined to a property boundary they can be installed round a garden feature such as a swimming pool, patio, timber decking, dividing a vegetable garden from the reminder and many other uses.
It is not just the mix of palings which can create a picket fence of a personal design but the spacing and the changes in paling length. A form of ‘wavy’ top line can be applied to many of the examples. Even changing the height to ‘frame’ a gate or other feature can make a difference.
We only supply picket fence palings in unfinished, plain wood, ready to be painted or stained in an appropriate colour. This enables a fence, other than basic brown to be created. Properly maintained wood fences can last many years and also give the opportunity for a change of colour, or even a two tone colour. While a hedge may be relatively inexpensive to plant regular trimming, by a contractor can, in the long run be much more expensive. Maintenance of a wooden fence is certainly less expensive than a hedge which required at least annual trimming. |
